Marcus Wanselius, PhD Student at SweDeliver och and Uppsala University's Department of Medicinal Chemistry, defends his thesis: Development and characterization of an in vitro method for interaction studies between polymers and pharmaceuticals: Aiding in the development of new drug delivery systems.

Parenteral Drug Delivery – The administration of drugs by injection into the fat tissue under the skin – is widely used in clinical medicine. It's the most commonly used administration for biomolecular drugs with limited oral bioavailability and for therapies requiring continuous and robust delivery at low dose rate, examples of such compounds are insulin, growth hormones and vaccines.

Within the framework of national competence center SweDeliver, research on parenteral drug delivery has advanced in Sweden – in large due to the scientific expertise on self-aggregation and molecular interactions at Uppsala University's research environment for Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry. Here, Marcus Wanselius, in his PhD project Physiochemical Aspects of Subcutaneous Administration of Drugs, has developed and characterized an in vitro method for interaction studies between polymers and pharmaceuticals

Friday 20 October Marcus defends his thesis at Uppsala Biomedical Centre. Opponent is Anna Fureby, Professor at Lund University and RISE. Grading committee is Tim Melander Bowden, Associate Professor at Uppsala University, Katarina Edsam, Associate Professor at Swedish Medical Products Agency and Torbjörn Petterson, Associate Professor at KTH.

Researcher bio Marcus Wanselius received his Master of Science in Pharmacy at Uppsala University in 2014. After that he worked as a pharmacy manager before being recruited as a PhD student at Uppsala University's Department of Medicinal Chemistry in 2018.
