Tuesday 19 September, Vice-chancellor Anders Hagfeldt signed Sara Mangsbo's appointment as Professor of Protein and Antibody Drugs at the Department of Pharmacy. Sara was recruited to the Faculty of Pharmacy in 2017 as part of Uppsala University's investment in biological drugs in pharmacy. Since then, Sara Mangsbo has been named Entrepreneur of the Year, received the Hjärnäpplet innovation award and earned a place on IVA's 100 list with her acclaimed method Adaptable Drug Affinity Conjugate.

“It is incredibly inspiring to take part in establishing a completely new research environment – and even more so doing it in collaboration with Greta Hultqvist, also a researcher with a focus on Biological drugs. Together, we have developed several courses, recruited skilled teachers and committed ourselves to training a new generation of researchers. That I am now granted the opportunity to continue our journey as a Professor will generate added values and is something I am very much looking forward to,” says Sara Mangsbo.

The appointment also means that the Department of Pharmacy for the first time ever has more women than men among its Professors – something that has not previously happened at the Faculty of Pharmacy since its foundation in 1968. Lena Friberg, newly appointed Head of the Department of Pharmacy, sees this as the result of an inclusive and positive working climate with room for both female and male role models with successful research careers.

“I am very happy that we, as the first Department of our Faculty, have managed to achieve a good balance. My hope is that we, by motivating our employees and adding positive energy, can inspire even more young women to an academic career, which I am convinced will contribute to a broader approach throughout our organisation,” states Lena Friberg, Professor of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics.
